Rivian EV

Rivian battery CAN and platform CAN dropping out, traced to the dash harness

By Sebastian Rivera

The short answer

Battery CAN and platform CAN on this Rivian were both dropping out because of a fault in the dash harness. Gently moving the harnesses at E008 with the scope on both networks reproduced the dropout every time, with CAN high and CAN low pulled to ground.

Symptom
Battery CAN and platform CAN dropping out
Real scope capture from a Rivian, network traffic, then a dropout to flat line, then traffic again
The flat stretch in the middle is the network dropping out.

How it was found

  1. Put the oscilloscope on both networks at the same time.
  2. Gently moved the harnesses at E008 while watching both captures.
  3. Every time, both networks dropped out, with CAN high and CAN low pulled down to ground.
  4. That pointed to a shared harness, the dash harness.

Root cause

A fault in the dash harness pulling both networks to ground.

The fix

Replace the dash harness, clear the codes and retest.

What this means for your team

When 2 networks drop out together, look for what they share. Reproducing the fault on the scope while moving the harness turns an intermittent problem into proof.
